Stage one of Qunaba Landfill plan complete
THE Qunaba Landfill master plan is one step closer to reality following the completion of stage one of the project and the opening of the waste facility's new entrance.
Council's Waste and Recycling portfolio spokesperson Cr Vince Habermann said the upgrades to the facility had been made to extend the life of the landfill which was nearing capacity.
"The landfill capability of the Qunaba facility will reach capacity within the next 10 to 20 years so Council has developed a master plan to slowly introduce a range of upgrades to the facility over time which will see it act as a transfer station in years to come," Cr Habermann said.
"This will ensure that coastal residents still have convenient access to a waste facility."
He said stage one had involved the construction of a weighbridge and an alternative access road to the facility on Potters Rd which was about 200m closer to Bargara Rd than the previous entrance.
"This is just the first of four stages of the master plan which will be rolled out over a number of years.
"The additional stages of the master plan, which include the construction of a drop-off centre, new recycling shop and transfer station will be completed before the landfill reaches its final fill profile."
