Springfield waits for Brisbane Lions base decision

BRISBANE Lions could announce that Springfield will be their next training base within a matter of weeks.

The QT understands the Lions are about to choose between Springfield and QEII Stadium at Nathan as their future base and Cr David Morrison said "they should be making an announcement this month".

The QT reported in November that Springfield Land Corporation had handed a 6ha parcel of land on Springfield Parkway to the Ipswich City Council for the purpose of developing a sporting complex that could host the Lions.

The site is within 300m of the Springfield Central railway station now under construction.

The council's planning chairman, Cr Paul Tully, and recreation chairman, Cr David Morrison, had previously toured the AFL facilities in Melbourne with a view to replicating an elite AFL training and community base in Springfield.

"The Lions want to have something ready to be training on by 2015 and we would like to know as soon as possible so we can budget on planning for that as well," Cr Morrison said.

"To have an AFL team based in Ipswich would be a real coup. It would be fantastic for young players who play Aussie Rules to have an AFL team here," Cr Morrison said.

"If they say that the winner is Ipswich we would be thrilled. Both have their pros and cons. QEII exists already, but has to have a lot of retro fitting for the Lions to train there.

"The Springfield (base) does not exist, but it can be custom built for what they want so that they can walk into a brand-new facility.

"The other plus for Springfield is that it is in the middle of the western corridor, which is the predicted growth area for south-east Queensland for years to come."
