Ipswich man 'bashed cop'

AN Ipswich man is among five charged over a brawl outside a Brisbane pub.

Police were called to the intersection of Jane and Boundary Sts, at West End, early Monday morning, following a fight involving about 12 men.

It is alleged a male senior constable and female constable were both assaulted while responding to the disturbance.

Douglas Menefata Asiata, 24, from Springfield, was charged with two counts of serious assault on police, one causing bodily harm, and one count each of affray and assault occasioning bodily harm.

Mr Asiata, sporting several abrasions to his face, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday, where he was granted bail.

Mr Asiata allegedly punched a policeman who was trying to break up a fight outside the Boundary Hotel just after midnight.

The officer was taken to hospital with cuts, bruising and swelling to the head and face.

A female police officer was also injured during the melee, which involved 12 men.

Police believe some of the brawlers were later involved in a car crash.

A Wavell Heights man, 23, a Crestmead man, 19, a Marsden man, 18, and a Heritage Park man, 22, have also been charged over the incident.

All five men will next appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court November 9.
