Sports Precinct funding 'a matter for council', says MP

HINKLER MP Keith Pitt says it's up to the council to apply for Federal funding for the Fraser Coast's Sports Precinct and he "cannot lobby for grant applications that are not there".

His comments come as debate over who should foot the bill for the development on the controversial Nikenbah project continues.

The next stage is set to be completed before Christmas.

Fraser Coast councillors have repeatedly discussed approaching different levels of government to help fund the project.

Plans to secure State and Federal Government funding are still being developed by the council after the business case for the Sports Precinct was received in July.

Mr Pitt has repeatedly said there were different grants available for the council.

He has stopped short of saying whether he supports the precinct.

"As the Federal Member I've seen any number of iterations of the Sports Precinct, in different types of capacities, and the council are continuing to work on it," Mr Pitt said.

"What they apply for in terms of Federal grants is entirely a matter for the council, that's their job.

"But I can't lobby for grant applications that aren't there."

An $8 million funding application under the third round of the National Stronger Regions Fund was knocked back in 2016.

But the council received a lifeline in July when $1.1 million for the construction of clubhouses at the precinct was approved under the State Government's Building Better Regions fund.
