Solstice event a celebration

IN celebration of the shortest day and longest night of the year, local man Stan Edwards will be hosting a winter solstice event for all ages.

Winter Solstice Coonarr will kick off this Saturday from midday on the picturesque banks of the Elliott River.

"It's a gathering of good people," Mr Edwards said.

"Expect great bands playing original music, market stalls, art displays and activities all in a beautiful bush setting."

Mr Edwards is no stranger to holding these types of events and said the idea derived from early European practices.

"In Europe, once the farmers would finish with their crop they would hold big parties to celebrate," he said.

"I thought I would bring the idea to Australia."

"I used to run these events down in New South Wales where they were a big hit."

"I tried it out in Bundaberg three years ago which started out as something I did at my own property with friends. It has now grown to be much bigger so I decided to source a new location and open it to the public."

The theme for this year's event is medieval, with a range of interesting activities planned to keep the crowd entertained.

"There will be blacksmith demonstrations happening throughout the day along with some medieval archery," Mr Edwards said.

Six bands will perform their original songs throughout the night including Australian blues and roots singer Geneieve Chadwick.

Entry to the event is $40 for adults and children under 14 free. Camping is available on site for an extra $10.

Mr Edwards said the event is not one to be missed.

"It's completely different, Bundaberg has not seen anything like this before," he said.

The winter solstice will take place on June 21.
