Warm socks for region's homeless

THE region’s homeless will feel a little warmer this winter thanks to a shipment of socks from Centrelink Bundaberg.

The government organisation hosted its inaugural Homeless Sausage Sizzle on Friday, held in recognition of National Homeless Person’s Week.

About 150 pairs of socks in all sizes were presented to staff from the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter at the event and were bought using funds raised by Centrelink staff through the sale of soup at lunchtime.

Centrelink community engagement officer Desley Cunnington said the event gave staff an opportunity to engage with the community.

“As a result of last week’s barbecue, a few more people who are doing it tough in Bundaberg are now aware of our services and the support we can offer,” Ms Cunnington said.
