Smart men are dressing to impress
MEN'S clothing chain Connor opened a store at Tweed City Shopping Centre six weeks ago and business is already going well, said Kate Wholohan, regional manager for Qld, Northern NSW and NT.
The opening comes at a time when the men's fashion industry is experiencing rapid growth and increasing sophistication, and the store's success could be due to these trends.
Miss Wholohan, who has worked for the clothes chain for more than two years, said that when a spot in Tweed City became vacant, they could not pass it up.
"We had an opportunity to open at a great site," she said.
"We didn't previously have a store in the Northern Rivers area."
While the market for men's fashion has grown significantly, it is still quite small in comparison to that of women's fashion, Mrs Wholohan said.
"Women's wear has a lot more influence on personal style," she said.
"Men's wear is a little more limited in how different the clothes can be."
Alongside Lowes and Man to Man, there are now three men's-only clothes stores in Tweed City, compared with 11 retailers that exclusively sell women's clothes.
Yet the gap between men's and women's fashion has narrowed markedly in recent years.
Miss Wholohan said it might be because men are becoming more aware of fashion.
"They have more opportunity to express themselves through what they wear," she said.
"There is a lot more diversity (in male fashion) than in previous times.
"It is definitely a growing market."
As the market grows, so too does the Connor chain and brand.
"In the past month, we've opened 10 stores."
There are 55 Connor stores throughout Australia, with plans for more.
