'Slow' internet affects businesses

NEVILLE Hughes is utterly convinced about the value of the National Broadband Network.

The managing director of GTC Financial works closely with small and medium businesses in the Gladstone region and said slow internet was stifling productivity.

"I've got clients who are doing work on the LNG expansion and the only way to really interact with those big contractors is electronically," he said.

"The size of the contracts and the various files are huge and, the longer it takes to download that information, the less productive those firms are."

For his own business, Mr Hughes said the NBN can't arrive soon enough.

"Everything is done electronically," he said.

"All our financial planning work, every bit of it, is internet-based."

"We've had situations where we've had massive files that we can't upload because they are just too big."

GTC Financial exchanges vast amounts of information online daily, and that communication is made painfully slow by current speeds. Mr Hughes said with the massive expansion of Gladstone, NBN Co needed to roll out the new network as soon as possible.

"It doesn't make sense to roll out the NBN to areas that have minimal growth, and ignore an area that is undergoing a massive boom. Why wouldn't you roll it out early so that businesses here can cope with that growth?"
