Sizzling September temps
IF THE rising mercury has you reaching for the air-conditioning remote or heading to the beach, spare a thought for our neighbours in the North Burnett who are headed for unseasonably warm September conditions this week.
The Weather Channel chief meteorologist Dick Whitaker said Gayndah, Mundubbera, Biggenden and Mt Perry would feel the heat when the mercury soared to 33 degrees at the weekend.
"It's certainly going to be well above average," Mr Whitaker said.
Bundaberg is expected to reach a top of 29 degrees on Saturday, 3.6 degrees above our average September maximum, but still 4.2 below our September record, which was recorded on the 30th in 1991.
Mt Perry, Gayndah, Biggenden and Mundubbera are tipped to hit 33 degrees on Saturday and Sunday with Monto reaching 31.
"Monto's average September maximum is 27.2 and their hottest September day was on September 10, 1996 with a 34.5 degree peak," Mr Whitaker said.
"Gayndah's average September maximum is 26.9 but it has been up to 39.4 and that was on September 22, 1943."
Mr Whitaker said the heat was thanks to a trough.
"Probably not quite record temperatures but it will be at the very, very high end of the spectrum," he said.
Mr Whitaker said the good news was a combination of wet weather from Saturday to Tuesday and wind would cool things down.
"We're expecting cooler southerly winds to move through the area around Sunday Monday as the trough moves through," he said.
Anzac Pool manager Ian Thomson said the warmer weather and school holidays had made for a busy few days.
"We've had a very favourable couple of days to start the school holidays," Mr Thomson said.
"But it's not just the kids - we're in a good spot for the hostels so we've got quite a few international visitors, a few doing their scuba training and we even had a grandma here who was rapt with the facility," he said.
"I think our inflatable equipment has a role in the number of people we've had here but certainly the warmer weather has also been a major factor."
