EARLIER this month, the NewsMail put out a call for entries into the Song 4 Alana competition.

So far, 17 entries have been received, with a few more still to come before the October 28 song contest deadline.

Five finalists will be chosen by a panel of local judges and the public will then vote on the winning song which will be the first one Bundaberg toddler Alana Reid will hear after she undergoes specialist surgery in the US.

Little Alana was born with microtia, meaning small or absent ear and her family needs to raise $97,000 to pay for an operation to widen her ear canal and give her full hearing.

The Bundaberg community has rallied behind the cause, helping to raise $24,000 of the required amount so far.

Alana's mum Emma said she was thrilled by the community's care and the amazing songs local musicians had penned to pledge their support.

"It's really quite overwhelming knowing musicians that we have never met have spent so much time writing and recording songs all dedicated to my little girl," Mrs Reid said.

"I really am glad I am not a judge, it's going to be a hard decision narrowing it down to only the top five."

Mrs Reid said with so much talent going around, the catchy tunes had already been getting a workout on her phone.

"I have all the entries on my iPhone, I have been listening to them, they are really good, I have cried a few times, it's still beyond belief," she said.

The top five songs will be made into a CD to be released on November 11, to be recorded by Bundaberg Digital Media free of charge.

The NewsMail, Bundy Broadcasters, Bundaberg Live!, Hinkler Central and Harvey Norman have all sponsored the song contest.
