Sheffield Shield shake-up announced

CRICKET Australia has announced it will trial the use of a bonus point system in the Sheffield Shield final this season.

For this summer at least a draw in the final will not be enough for the regular season's top team to be crowned champions.

Instead, as long as 270 overs have been bowled, a drawn final will be decided by the same bonus point system that has been implemented in the Sheffield Shield's past four regular seasons.

Under the system a team is awarded 0.01 bonus points for every run it scores above 200 in the first 100 overs of its first innings with the bat, and 0.1 points for each wicket it takes in the first 100 overs of its first innings with the ball.

"We wished to ensure the match is a fitting finale to our marquee men's domestic competition," Peter Roach, CA's head of cricket operations, said.

"The rule will be trialled this year, and we believe it will encourage the teams involved to push for a result and improve the spectacle in the tournament's showcase match."

The trial has come after recommendations from CA's Playing Conditions Advisory Committee, which features current players George Bailey and Molly Strano, CA Board members Mark Taylor and Michael Kasprowicz and high-performance manager Pat Howard among others.
