The truth behind 'that shark pic' from Hervey Bay

UPDATE: IF YOU guessed the shark in this photo is a 2.5m hammerhead, the photographer can confirm you are correct.

Casey Woods contacted the Chronicle on Wednesday to correct the record, and shared her tale behind the photo.

"I saw it yesterday on Shout Out Hervey Bay and thought it was mine so I went back through Facebook to find it," she said.

"I don't understand why someone would fish it out now," pun unintended.

Sure enough she found the photo, taken on January 24, 2014, during what was supposed to be a fun day out with her family.

"I remember it clearly actually, we took my nieces to the beach and we had lunch at Maddigan's," she said.

"We went across to the beach, they got changed and were about to run down when we noticed it thrashing around."

Casey was able to get close enough to identify the shark - a hammerhead - and took the photo when it returned to deeper waters.

"It was scary, it was right in front of us and where the kids were about to go," Casey said.

The photo dominated social media since it was shared on Saturday, with much of the discussion based on whether or not it was actually a shark.

Surprisingly for Casey, the photo gained much more attention now than it did two years ago, and that did not sit well with the 23-year-old.

She was primarily unhappy to see the facts forgotten when it was shared.

"It's a little bit insulting that people are trying to say it's theirs.

"I don't mind my picture being shared around as long as people know the truth."

EARLIER: A PHOTO said to have been taken on the beach at Urangan has caused mass debate across the Fraser Coast's social media groups and forums.

The image of what appears to be a fin and a tail in the shallow waters of the beach was allegedly taken over the weekend.

Initially believed to be a shark, many have speculated it is a dolphin, based on the shape of the fin.
