A SEVERE thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Stanthorpe, Boonah, Inglewood, Pittsworth and Moonie.

Hail fell in parts of Warwick earlier today.

Although rain is falling today, forecasters say it will clear for the start of the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

The trough will mostly clear in the Garden City by tomorrow and it will be a sunny 20 degrees.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Chris Joseph said it would most likely stay fine for the first weekend of carnival with maximum temperatures a balmy 20 degrees.

The bureau's forecast for rain only extends until Sunday but Mr Joseph said there was a slight chance of showers on Monday.

Another trough could push through late on Monday afternoon and a system could develop on Tuesday, bringing with it a slight risk of showers.

"But nothing as active as what we're seeing today," Mr Joseph said.

"At this early stage it doesn't look too bad and there are dry south westerlies dominating next week.

"There will be good conditions after Tuesday."

Rainfall has been sporadic across the Downs overnight with between 1mm and 10mm falling.

Mr Joseph advised residents to keep an eye out for weather warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.
