Sisters team up for QLD medal swag
SISTERS Selina and Michelle Williams waved the Musgrave Pony Club flag high at the recent Queensland State Championships bringing home a swag of medals.
The talented twosome have honed their craft on their parents’ Bundaberg acreage and are poised for state selection after an impressive display at the Theodore gymkhana.
Selina said sibling rivalry had been an important training motivation but was put aside in competition.
“We try and help each other out there,” she said.
“I’ll get in the crowd and cheer her on when she’s riding and she’ll give me a few tips to try and encourage me.”
Heavy rain made for a wet and furious end to the competition with boggy conditions proving difficult.
Selina dominated the under-17 category to claim first in Rider Class, second in Led Class, third in Presentation Class and fifth in the Maroochy Bend.
Michelle followed in her sister’s footsteps in the 17 to 25 years category claiming first in Keyhole, second in Theodore T, third in Sporting Figure of 8, and seventh in Skuddaho.
The pair shared the podium at the end of the four-day competition, a triumph Selina hopes to repeat.
“It was pretty great feeling to have my sister up there with me,” she said.
“We do a lot of training together so it was great to get some recognition.”
They were part of a 20-strong field of Bundaberg competitors who travelled for the annual competition.
The pair will now begin training for the Queensland Equitation and Show Jumping Championships to be held on the Sunshine Coast in April.
