Round Hill Road re-opened, but proceed with caution

UPDATE:

GLADSTONE Regional Council and contract staff worked through the night and as of 6am reopened Round Hill Road using a side-track under single lane 24-hour traffic light control.

The side track will remain in place until engineers can assess the Bebo Arch culvert structure.

Motorists are urged to negotiate this side track with caution.

EARLIER: Gladstone Regional Council road crews will work through the night creating a detour access to Agnes Water after a complete road closure earlier today.

Gladstone Mayor Gail Sellers said urgent works were occurring on Round Hill Road, about 5km north of the Fingerboard intersection (towards Agnes Water).

Ten days ago the council had closed the inbound lane towards Agnes Water, restricting traffic to a single lane with a 40km/h speed limit over a flood-damaged Bebo Arch culvert structure.

Councillor Sellers said today that the lane which had been closed to traffic had shown signs of further collapse at about 11am.

"Movement was sufficient enough to cause concern that the structure could be compromised and result in a major structural failure; hence Council imposed an immediate closure of both lanes," Cr Sellers said.

Prior to today's road closure, the council had been investigating possible traffic alternatives in the event of both short-term and long-term repairs of the structure.

At present there is no other road access into or out of the Agnes Water and Seventeen Seventy area.

"Council work crews have urgently been dispatched to the site and council engineers are immediately travelling to the area to investigate and determine options," Cr Sellers said.

"Providing a safe work environment can be established, council work crews will work through the night to create a side-track which will require some fences to be moved.

"This is expected to be a rough but serviceable track which will be operational by some time tomorrow morning."

Further information will be placed on the home page of Council's website www.gladstone.qld.gov.au under the 'News' section and 'Road Condition Reports and Closures' tab as it becomes available.
