Robbed at knifepoint, back to work the next day

A 17-year-old shop attendant returned to work last night less than 24 hours after he was robbed at knifepoint while doing his job.

Police are still searching for the man who stormed Spar Express convenience store at Mermaid Beach just before 10pm on Sunday.

The man, described as slim, 175cm tall and caucasian, threatened the young attendant behind the counter with a wooden blade before making off with cash.

Spar Express manager Sam Baweja, 26, said "Cameron", the attendant, had worked at the Gold Coast Highway business for only two weeks.

"It wasn't a big blade," he said.

"It was a stick … (with) a blade.

"Never ever before (has anything like this happened at Spar Express)."

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the weapon used in the armed robbery was made of wood and was edged but investigators were not sure exactly what kind of blade the man had brandished.

"I don't have any other information in relation to what sort of item it was," he said.

The spokesman said investigators' inquiries were continuing this week.

As of late yesterday, police had not called anyone in for questioning over the Sunday-night robbery.

"Police investigations are still ongoing," the spokesman said.

The alleged offender was last seen heading south on the Gold Coast Highway after fleeing Spar Express convenience store at Mermaid Beach on foot.

The shop attendant was not physically injured in the armed robbery.

Police urge anyone with information to call 131 444.
