Riewoldt unlucky to miss another All Australian selection

AFL: He has five All Australian jumpers already, but Nick Riewoldt deserved a sixth this year.

The Saints skipper has been left out of the initial squad of 40 players, which will be cut back to a line-up off 22 named on Thursday night.

All Australian in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2014, Riewoldt has produced another year to remember at age 33.

Spending more time on the wing than ever before, he averaged career highs of 10.57 marks and 20.76 disposals a game, all the while still kicking his two goals a game.

In fact, his overall tally of 222 marks was 49 ahead of the next best, Carlton halfback Sam Docherty, who is in line for his first All Australian jumper.

Adelaide had the most representatives with six, among them Tom Lynch, who while enjoying a solid year, could easily have made way for Riewoldt as they play similar roles as the link man to the attack.

In the same number of games, he took 82 less marks, not to mention had fewer possessions and a few less goals.

Ahead of their first ever final match-up, cross-town rivals Sydney and GWS provided five representatives in the squad of 40, including Swan Lance Franklin.

The Swans superstar should win his sixth All Australian jumper, while Geelong veteran backman Corey Enright is also in the running for a half-dozen.

Melbourne's Max Gawn is the only ruckman selected, meaning he'll win his first.

Gold Coast's Tom Lynch (66 goals) will face tough opposition to be named in the final team, with Franklin (74 goals) and Josh Kennedy (80) sure to be picked in the key forward posts, alongside crumber Eddie Betts (66).

Bottom two teams Brisbane and Essendon were the only teams not have players picked.

ALL AUSTRALIAN SQUAD: Betts, Jenkins, Laird, Lynch, Sloane, Talia (Ade); Docherty, Simpson (Carl); Pendlebury, Treloar (Coll); Neale (Frem); Dangerfield, Enright, Selwood (Geel); Lynch (GC); Coniglio, Greene, Scully, Shaw, Ward (GWS); Gunston, Mitchell, Rioli (Haw); Gawn (Melb); Tarrant (NM); Pittard (PA); Martin, Rance (Rich); Steven (StK); Franklin, Hannebery, Kennedy, Parker, Rampe (Syd); Gaff, Kennedy, McGovern, Shuey (WC); Bontempelli, Boyd (WB).
