A MOTORCYCLE rider had his right arm amputated just below the elbow in a horrific crash on the Cunningham Highway yesterday.

The 53-year-old man was riding on a section of the highway near Mutdapilly State School when he crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and collided head-on with a 12-tonne truck, about 10.05am.

The rider survived the impact but sustained massive injuries to his legs, in addition to the loss of the arm.

He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to hospital.

Ipswich Inspector Keith McDonald said the rider did not suffer any major chest or head injuries, which was fortunate given the severity of the crash.

Police do not know why the rider crossed into the path of the truck and the forensic crash unit and scenes of crime will investigate further.
