Rice hints at retirement

TRIPLE Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Rice has hinted she will retire from swimming after the 2012 London Olympics.

The 23-year-old was concerned she would not be able to continue to sustain the physical and mental level needed to compete at the highest level.

"I will be 24 (for the London Games) and time to move on and make some new changes I think," Rice told News Limited.

"I just know within myself I wouldn't be able to give that effort for another four years and I don't really see the point in swimming through to (retire at) a non-Olympic event, because the Olympics is the pinnacle.

"Swimming requires so much commitment and dedication and I know if I'm not giving 100 per cent to it I'm not going to get the results I want and I don't see the point in doing something half-heartedly."

However, Rice refused to speculate on what she would do once she finished with life in the pool.
