REPLAY: Watch St Margaret Mary’s win over Southport SHS

The St Margaret Mary's juggernaut rolled on when the Townsville-based side positioned itself for a defence of the girls champions division.

St Margaret Mary's beat Southport SHS 69-59 and Saints will be shooting for three state titles in a row on Sunday.

Southport SHS's role should not be swiftly diminished and it was an enormous task to firstly reach the semi-finals, and then compete toe-to-toe with the champions.

It was a thrilling finish as Southport closed the gap to four points late in the final term.

Southport never went away and St Margaret Mary's could feel their constant presence.

The score did not reflect the tension around the court, so close was the contest.

On the surface St Margaret Mary's has won the last two state championships, but this team is not those sides.

There has been a natural turnover of players and now a young group who have been coming through since under 10s is the foundation of the team.

Most players from the last year's winning squad are gone but the likes of class representative player Chailee Ward is leading the new guard.

Coach Alison Ward said the secret to St Margaret Mary's long lasting success was unselfish players.

"They play for the team and they don't care who scores," Ward said.

"They are just a really good bunch who play well together and get on well together."

She said Southport did a tremendous job on her team defensively but she was proud her girls prevailed.

"We are a very young group and we just have to give it our best shot tomorrow," Ward said.
