Remembering the Vella boys one year on from tragic deaths

ONE year on from the tragic deaths of Sarina brothers Frank and George Vella, hundreds gathered from far and wide to pay tribute to the hard-working men.

The tribute, held on Sunday, was an opportunity for friends and family to come together and remember the good times they spent with Frank and George.

It wasn't a time to mourn, it was a time to celebrate the lives of two of our best.

Stephen Vella - brother to Frank and George - wanted to thank everyone in the community for their ongoing support.

He said the gathering was "just what the doctor ordered".

"I am so thankful to everyone who came and for all of the help I received in putting the memorial event together," he said.

"It was a real success and I'm really happy with how it turned out."

The gathering was held inside the shed at Vella Haulage, George's Sarina business.

Stephen said about 300 people attended.

"Originally we were going to have the memorial at my place but because of how wet it has been we moved it to the Vella Haulage shed," he said.

"A lot of people from Sarina and surrounding areas came, but we also had people who flew up from Sydney and Brisbane just to be there.

"It was more of a happy event, we wanted people to remember Frank and George in a happy environment, we didn't want people to be sad."

Messages of support flooded Facebook Sunday from relatives and friends of the Vella family.

"Today is the day where we all as a community, friends and relatives, remember two of the most well known men who were sadly taken from us," a friend posted to Facebook.

"There is not a day that goes past where we all still hurt and miss you both so much."

Another friend spoke of the Vella brothers' mischievous nature.

"Thinking of the Vella family today. I'm positive the two boys will be up there creating havoc and mischief, we wouldn't expect anything less. Loveable rascals they were," the post read.

Frank and George Vella tragically died on January 13, 2018 after being overcome by fumes while cleaning out a tanker that had been used to transport molasses the day before.

The deaths rocked the close knit town of Sarina.

About 1000 people attended the brothers' funeral which was held on January 22, 2018 and the community came to a standstill as the funeral cortege passed through the town.

Stephen Vella remembers his brothers as two respected members of the community who loved to fish and have a good time.

He said they were loved and missed by all who had the privilege of knowing them and would always be remembered.
