Region hit hard by flu season

THE flu season has hit hard in Bundaberg with House Call Doctor reporting a massive spike in after hours calls.

Latest Queensland Health figures show 212 people have been admitted to hospital so far this year with the flu.

House Call Doctor chief executive officer Wayne Ormond said he had more than doubled the number of doctors on duty to keep up with the number of house calls being made to sick people across Bundaberg.

"People with the flu are calling us after hours to get a doctor to make a house call to their home because they don't want to go to the emergency department," Mr Ormond said.

"Getting a House Call Doctor to your door is 100% bulk-billed so patients get to wait in the comfort of their home and see a doctor without being a cent out of pocket."

House Call Doctor has treated hundreds of patients a week since the flu season began.

Mr Ormond said people should take precautions to avoid contracting the flu such as washing hands and covering their mouth.
