Refs battle to be among full-time few in A-League

THE A-League will have professional referees for the first time in its history after Football Federation Australia announced three would go full-time from the start of next season.

The likes of Chris Beath (pictured), Strebre Delovski, Jarred Gillett, Ben Williams and Peter Green will go head to head for the three spots.

The FFA will go through a recruitment process and will be encouraging all interested referees to apply.

Applications opened yesterday and close on July 3.

The successful candidates will be announced in mid-July, and initially, the three referees will each be offered two-year contracts.

A-League boss Damien de Bohun said he was thrilled with the announcement.

"We have been working towards this outcome for the past three years and we are proud to announce that we are able to appoint our first professional referees for the upcoming Hyundai A-League season," he said.
