Rapist jailed for eight years

A BUNDABERG man was jailed for eight years after raping a woman with severe mental and physical impairments who was in his care.

The 77-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to raping the 34-year-old woman and the indecent treatment of a person with an impairment.

Bundaberg District Court was told on Wednesday that the man was the woman’s carer at the time of the offences, which took place in April last year.

The man had cared for the woman since she was eight years old.

Judge Leanne Clare ordered the man serve eight years in prison, with a parole date set for April 15 next year.

The judge took into account the time the 77-year-old had already served in prison when setting the parole date.
