Quiz our Hinkler hopefuls
THE public will have its chance to put candidates for Hinkler on the spot just days before the federal election, at a community forum organised by the NewsMail.
At least five of the six candidates will face questions submitted in advance to the newspaper and put to them at CQUniversity on Thursday, August 19 from 6pm.
NewsMail readers are invited to submit their questions to individual or all candidates by email, SMS, fax or letter by 5pm on Tuesday, and everyone is invited to the event, which could be crucial for swinging voters.
All candidates have confirmed they will attend the forum, except for Greens hopeful Jenny Fitzgibbon, who has said she may attend.
The forum will be chaired by Bundaberg Chamber of Commerce president Ron Bishop, who will put the questions to the candidates.
“I'm looking forward to seeing what is on people's mind and what is important to them for their family,” Mr Bishop said.
“I think some of those things would be access to capital cities, more jobs in the region, how they are going to move people from metropolitan to regional areas and infrastructure.”
Member for Hinkler Paul Neville said he expected some interesting questions to be thrown at the candidates.
“It's an interesting opportunity for voters to find out more about the candidates just days before the election,” he said.
Labor Party candidate Belinda McNeven said she was looking forward to the event.
“I'm always happy to talk to people and answer their questions,” she said.
Independent candidate Adrian Wone was not as positive and said he didn't think he would get many questions.
“People are more interested in the bigger parties,” he said.
But fellow independent Cy d'Oliveira was upbeat about the event.
“When I was handing out leaflets, I got an excellent response from people in Bundaberg,” he said.
Family First candidate Trevor Versace said he too was keen to attend the forum.
All questions should be marked “forum question" and need to be submitted by 5pm Tuesday, August 12
