Gas to supply Japan for 20 years

THE Queensland Gas Company (QGC) will supply Japan with gas for 20 years.

The BG Group reached agreement with Japan’s third largest electric power company Chubu Electric at the weekend for the long-term supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the QCLNG plant earmarked for Curtis Island.

Chubu Electric will purchase up to 120 cargoes over a 20-year term beginning in 2014.

As part of BG Group’s strategy to expand its Asia-Pacific presence, the Group opened a new LNG Trading and Marketing centre earlier this month in Singapore in order to increase its coverage of Asian markets and enhance its services to regional customers.

BG Group executive director and managing director, Americas and Global LNG Martin Houston said Asia was a key strategic market for the BG Group.

“We are very pleased to establish a long-term relationship with Chubu Electric, one of the largest and most experienced buyers of LNG globally,” Mr Houston.

BG group executive vice president, Australia and QGC managing director Catherine Tanna said QGC is delighted to welcome Chubu Electric as a foundation customer for QCLNG.
