Qld power demand highest ever

SOUTH-EAST Queensland's air-conditioning addiction hit an all-time high yesterday, smashing all previous records for power use.

As the mercury topped 35 degrees in Brisbane yesterday afternoon - the hottest this year - electricity demand peaked at the highest levels in the state's history.

A whopping 4609 megawatts of electricity surged through the Energex grid after midday - a full 18 megawatts more than the previous record of 4500 megawatts on February 9 last year.

"That is the equivalent of basically an entire Brisbane suburb dropping onto the grid overnight," Energex spokesman Danny Donald told brisbanetimes.com.au.

"It is the most power South-East Queensland has demanded in the history of the state - we have never seen it climb so high before...and it is only going to increase."
