Psychiatrists to assess child abuser before possible release

PSYCHIATRISTS will assess a Mackay child molester in the coming months ahead of a hearing in June when he will seek to be released.

Ronald James Downs has been jailed for having sex with a 12-year-old intellectually disabled girl on the Gold Coast, for attempting or simulating intercourse with a three-year-old boy he picked up from a pram and indecently dealing with a girl aged four to six.

He was jailed on each occasion.

In 2008 his release was granted on a 37-point 15-year community-based supervision order but he has since found himself behind bars again.

Justice James Douglas, when the matter was mentioned in Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday, asked if he needed to make an order for psychiatric reports but Downs' lawyers said it was not necessary because he consented to being examined.

The hearing is set for June 20 this year.
