Proteas rocked by De Villiers surgery blow

CRICKET: Australia has been given a huge boost ahead of its forthcoming series against South Africa with Proteas skipper AB De Villiers set to have surgery on his troublesome elbow.

The star batsman will go under the knife next week, ruling him out of both the one-day series starting on Friday night (AEST) in Centurion and the three-Test series in Australia beginning in November.

The 32-year-old has been out of the game for the past two months but had been hoping to be passed fit at a training session in Johannesburg.

However, despite the rest and some strapping on the joint, he was still in significant pain and it was decided to have the operation.

Australia, meanwhile, warmed up for Friday's first ODI with an easy nine-wicket win over Ireland in Benoni.

A century stand from Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja took Australia to 1-199, going past the Irish total of 198 with almost 20 overs to spare.

After David Warner fell for 48, Khawaja (82) and Smith (59) shared an unbeaten second-wicket stand worth 126 from 129 balls.

Australia handed a debut to seamer Daniel Worrall and he posted figures of 1-43 in his 10 overs, while leg-spinner Adam Zampa took 3-37.
