Lockout laws for pubs and clubs in parliament this week

LICENSED venues in Queensland will have to stop serving drinks at 2am while those which serve to 3am will have to enforce a 1am lockout under proposed legislation changes.

The Queensland Government has announced today new measures to tackle alcohol-fuelled violence and Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said last drinks would be at 2am and some venues would be able to apply for an extended 3am model.

If the 3am model is adopted, those venues will have a 1am lockout.

Ms D'Ath said venues would be able to stay open after last drinks but would only be able to serve food and non-alcoholic drinks.

Under the proposed measures, high-alcohol content and rapid consumption drinks, including shots, will be banned after midnight.

Ms D'Ath said about 30,000 hospitalisations occurred every day due to alcohol consumption.

"One in six Queenslanders has been the victim of alcohol-fuelled violence and two-thirds of Queenslanders consider the city or centre of their town unsafe on a Saturday night," she said.

She said the legislation would be introduced to Parliament this week.

Shadow Attorney-General Ian Walker has slammed the Government's proposal, saying the lockout laws were full of holes.

He said there was no action on drugs, extra policing or education.

Mr Walker said the LNP's focus in its Safe Night Out Strategy, under the former LNP  Government, was targeting problem patrons and not punishing those who did the right thing.
