Predicted housing industry growth is right on target

MASTER Builders prediction of 28,000 dwelling commencements for the 2012-13 financial year appears to be right on target, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Master Builders director of housing policy Paul Bidwell said the figures showed a total of 14,191 dwelling commencements for the first six months of the financial year, up 2.9 per cent on the six months to the end of December 2011.

"This sets a solid platform for 2013," Mr Bidwell said.

"The new year started well with building approvals up 3.8% in January, and indications are that this trend will continue.

"Finance approvals for January were up four per cent, which will translate into increased building activity in the coming months.

"It means that we are right on track to hit our forecast of 28,000 starts for 2012-13."

Master Builders remains optimistic that housing activity will improve across the state during 2013.

"Certainly, the results of Master Builders Survey of Industry Conditions report for the March 2013 quarter confirm this view, with 38% of businesses believing the industry will strengthen in the next year," Mr Bidwell said.
