SALVATION Army's Tom Quinn Community Centre and Bundaberg North State School have scooped top prizes at the 2014 Get Ready Queensland - Resilient Australia Awards.

The awards were held in Townsville on Thursday night.

Tom Quinn Community Centre community services manager Tom Osborne said the entire organisation was very happy with the win.

The centre took out top honours in the Not for Profit category for its Rebuild Group work in the aftermath of the 2013 floods.

"It's fantastic to be rewarded for a great community effort," he said.

"We don't do this for gratification. We do this because part of our mission is to transform people's lives."

Meanwhile, Bundaberg North State School was celebrating after winning the top award in the Education and Research category for its innovative social and emotional program they named BEAR.

The school's guidance officer Alan Bowmaker said BEAR identified the four strategies to keep calm after a disaster - Breathe, Exit, Ask, Relax.

"As a result of the floods, we knew we had a whole group of children that were really upset, highly anxious and not coping," Mr Bowmaker said.

"So we put in place this program to keep children calm and focussed on school.

"We got some teddy bears and each child selects one and whenever they feel upset they can sit and hug their teddy bear."

Both organisations will now attend a national Resilient Australia Awards ceremony in November in Canberra.
