Population growth slows as immigration falls

AUSTRALIA'S population growth is at its lowest levels in nearly a decade because of a steep fall in immigration.

The nation's population in the year to March increased by 316,000 people - and now 23.7 million call Australia home.

Victoria experienced the fastest population growth rate in the country and the Northern Territory had the lowest.

Immigration was still the biggest contributor to population growth - adding 173,100 people to the overall number.

Queensland and Victoria are the only two states gaining population as a result of people moving interstate.
