Readers back Jack, but some call for new blood in council

THE NewsMail broke the news on Saturday that former Bundaberg MP and police officer Jack Dempsey would take to the polls in the council election on March 19 in a bid to become mayor.

Mr Dempsey is the third confirmed candidate, with Childers businessman Troy Madle and current Bundaberg Mayor Mal Forman also stating their plans to run for the top seat.

A NewsMail reader poll has so far uncovered that Mr Dempsey is the popular choice for Bundaberg's next mayor.

The poll asks: Of those candidates who have so far officially put up their hand to be the next Bundaberg Mayor, who would you vote for?

As of Sunday afternoon, Mr Dempsey has received about 220 votes out of 271, giving him 81% of votes while Mr Madle has recieved 10% of votes and Mal Forman 8%.

NewsMail Facebook readers had mixed reactions to the news, with some stating Mr Dempsey would be perfect for the position.

"I couldn't think of anyone better to represent Bundaberg as Mayor. A top local man," Matt Jensen said.

"A lovely genuine bloke who has time for people. And very much a part of the community with his family. I am very pleased to hear this news," Andrea McLaren said.

Other readers stated that fresh faces were needed at polling time.

"New blood is required, not burnt out ex-politicians," Carolyn Matteschek said.

"Bundaberg Bundaberg, will it ever learn, need new blood, had enough of the same old same old. Get someone not born or bred in Bundy, need someone with get up and go, someone younger with vision and not looking after their own interests," Jean Thomson said.

The poll is open until Thursday.
