Police search for man after stabbing in North Mackay

A 31-year-old man is in a stable condition in Mackay Base Hospital's intensive care unit after allegedly being stabbed multiple times.

Mackay Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Detective Senior Sergeant David Tucker said doctors operated on the man's injuries for hours.

About 11pm last night police and paramedics were called to a North Mackay address where they found a man who'd suffered at least two stab wounds, Det Snr Sgt Tucker said.

Detectives investigating the incident located another man, who is believed to have witnessed the alleged attack, who led officers to a second address in North Mackay.

Det Snr Sgt Tucker said police believe the stabbing occurred at this second address.

A crime scene was established and forensic officers made examinations.

Det Snr Sgt Tucker said there was only a couple hundred metres between the two locations.

"At this stage we don't know exactly what's occurred," Det Snr Sgt Tucker said.

Preliminary investigation suggested the victim had gone to an address and it is alleged an altercation occurred between him and a third man, he said.

"We don't know what the (alleged) altercation was about," Det Snr Sgt Tucker said.

As a result the victim received two stab wounds to the upper body. The victim has then left the address and gone to the address where police and paramedics initially attended.

Det Snr Sgt Tucker said it was believed the witness contacted police and paramedics.

Police haven't yet identified the weapon used in the alleged incident and Det Snr Sgt Tucker said this was part of the ongoing investigation.

Det Snr Sgt Tucker said detectives had only received a limited amount of information from the man they believed witnessed the attacked.

Police had not yet spoken to the victim, who is still in hospital.

Det Snr Sgt Tucker said officers also needed to speak with the third man believed to be involved in the incident.
