PM says he needs to call Kevin Rudd

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull was tight-lipped on Thursday afternoon about whether federal ministers endorsed Kevin Rudd for the UN Secretary-General role during a cabinet meeting.

Mr Turnbull faced media yesterday afternoon following the meeting but when asked what ministers had decided, he said he owed Mr Rudd a telephone call before making any announcements.

Yesterday was the first cabinet meeting since the election and it is believed there was division in cabinet over whether to endorse Mr Rudd for the job.

Acting Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek said there was no one better qualified.

She said she was mystified that there was a proposition to endorsing Mr Rudd.

Ms Plibersek also said if the leaders did not back Mr Rudd for the role that it would be embarrassing for the nation.

Leading up to the cabinet meeting, Mr Turnbull said Mr Rudd's nomination was not the most important issue on the agenda.
