Pitt starts talks to bring down power prices

HINKLER MP Keith Pitt has already taken his concerns about power prices to new Energy Minister Angus Taylor.

Mr Pitt said he was confident Mr Taylor would deliver for the region.

"Angus and I came into the parliament together in 2013 and I have already spoken to him about reducing the cost of electricity across the country," he said.

"He has a strong background in this field and I have every confidence he will take positive action in the short term."

The NewsMail asked Mr Pitt several questions yesterday after The Australian quoted him in a report about the Queensland LNP sitting together in Canberra, rather than with either the Liberal or National parties.

Mr Pitt, who sits with the Nationals, was reported as saying Queensland was stronger when it hunted as a pack.

In The Australian, he argued Queensland would have supported Peter Dutton as Prime Minister.

When the NewsMail yesterday asked if he supported a move for the Queensland LNP to sit as its own party in Canberra, he replied: "That's a matter for the executive arm of the Liberal National Party and party members - in Canberra I sit with the Nationals.

"The new Prime Minister appears to have a good mix of representatives from throughout Queensland and I congratulate my colleague Karen Andrews on her elevation into Cabinet."

In relation to power prices and the use of coal, Mr Pitt, who described himself as "fuel agnostic", said: "The best way to drive down prices is to have additional generating capacity. The responsibility lies squarely with the Queensland State Labor Government, which could drop prices today.

"A HELE (high-energy, low-emission) coal power station and a 600-megawatt Tully Millstream hydro-power project should be supported."
