Petition hits parliament

THE NewsMail's petition for more parking at the Bundaberg Hospital was tabled in state parliament yesterday.

Member for Bundaberg Jack Dempsey made a short speech when he presented the document to the house.

"(The petition) states that the residents of the Bundaberg region draw the attention of  the state government to the lack of car parking provision at the Bundaberg Hospital and the great strain this places on the elderly and infirm in particular," he said.

"As signatories, they call on the state government to commit to a viable plan for significantly improved parking at the hospital in a time frame to accommodate their growing and ageing population."

Almost 2800 people signed the petition which started in August before closing in early September.

"The NewsMail and its staff have to be complimented for this," Mr Dempsey said

"The staff went out over a number of weeks and were able to collect those signatures because of this issue."

Health Minister Geoff Wilson announced in September construction on a new 130 car park would start construction this month.

But the hospital is still finalising tenders for the project.

Tenders closed on Monday.
