Persistent predator cause of girl's 'greatest distress'

A CHILD molester kept abusing an innocent girl even after narrowly avoiding getting caught.

The former Gladstone and Ipswich man was sentenced to 10 years' jail this week for maintaining a sexual relationship with a child.

Jurors found the man guilty of several sex crimes including rape earlier this year.

Judge Deborah Richards said the victimised girl suffered "acute mental health issues" now.

Brisbane District Court heard the abuse happened at multiple locations, starting when the girl was less than 10 years old.

The court heard the man had a turbulent relationship with his wife.

The wife kicked him out and he moved to a different house where he again preyed on the girl.

A person he was living with once found the distressed girl in a park across the road and told the man to leave.

Judge Richards said the girl complained to her mother about abuse but when the mother and pedophile jointly confronted her, the girl withdrew the claims.

"Despite the fact you'd almost been found out, you continued to offend against her for years afterwards," the judge added.

When Judge Richards outlined details of various rapes, the man exclaimed "that's incorrect, Miss."

Defence counsel Kerry Copley said his client complained of the wife exerting financial control and humiliating him with "slaps to his testicles".

Mr Copley said his client had autism and some difficulty reading and writing.

Mr Copley said there were several "breaks" in the offending.

But a prosecutor said those gaps were largely due to the man simply having no access to the girl, and even on supervised visits the man carried out inappropriate sexually suggestive behaviour.

Judge Richards said the abuser was violent to the girl, who was scared of him so would comply with his vile sexual demands.

"The person who should have looked after her and protected her instead was the cause of her greatest distress."

The child abuser was sentenced to 10 years' jail, with 69 days pre-sentence custody declared as time served.

He will not be eligible for parole until October 11, 2026. -NewsRegional
