Alloway 1 beat ATW Gold in three-point thriller

AS THE sun sank from the sky Alloway 1 and ATW Gold finalised their preparations for the Bundaberg Netball Association Division 1 grand final and the performance from both teams lit up the early evening.

Through solid defence and precise attack, when the opportunity came up, Alloway 1 claimed back-to-back Div 1 titles with a 26-23 win over rivals ATW Gold.

Sometimes the energy drained from players during a long season and intense semi-finals can take away from the quality of grand finals but this was not the case at Bundaberg Superpark at the weekend.

With a team bristling with young talent Alloway 1 took the lead and was able to stretch it to seven goals in the last quarter, but the pride and the passion of ATW Gold took over and it mounted a challenge.

Clawing back goal after goal in the final period of play, ATW Gold had the crowd on its feet as the comeback was under way.

But Alloway was too good on the night and it enjoyed the ultimate success for another season.

The defensive work of Ruth Seesink and Casey Daniel was just one of the highlights for Alloway 1, adding to the duo's contribution were sisters Demi and Jamie Burgess who played above their age and experience might allow.

Demi, 14, and Jamie, 15, were two of the stars of the season and if Alloway 1 keeps bringing players of their quality through the ranks there will be more Div 1 titles in the near future.

Another star in the decider for Alloway 1 was the Bundaberg Div 1 player of the year Lauren Segon, her skill and speed caused plenty of headaches for ATW Gold.

Alloway have the honour of winning the first premiership at the new courts at Bundaberg Superpark along with the last at Daph Geddes Park in 2014, and if the club can continue to blood the talented young players and mix them with the experienced ones there could be more success in the coming years.

It was a great day for Alloway, it won four of the five senior grand finals.

Alloway 2 44 d Natives Magpies 25 (Div 2), Alloway 4 40 d ATW Rubies 36 (Div 4) and Alloway 6 46 d Wests Megas 36 (Div 5).
