Patrick Kaufusi signs new deal with the Cowboys
LEAGUE: After impressing for the defending NRL premiers, Bundaberg's Patrick Kaufusi has signed a contract extension with North Queensland.
With his current deal running out at the end of this year, the Past Brothers junior has signed a one-year deal to remain at the club until the end of 2017.
Part of the Cowboys' under-20 side and the elite pathways program, Kaufusi has featured in eight games this season as he has played some of the best football of his career at the premiership-winning outfit.
Despite not scoring yet in his career, the forward's numbers have been good with 491 metres gained in his 51 runs this season.
He has also made 100 tackles and 43 hit-ups.
With representative duties as well for Tonga, the contract extension for the 22-year-old is a big reward for his hard work and improvement on the field.
Along with the contract extension, Kaufusi has been selected on the bench for the Cowboys as they aim to end a two-match losing streak in the NRL.
They will take on the Sydney Roosters this weekend at Allianz Stadium.
The NewsMail tried to contact Kaufusi for a chat but he was unavailable for comment.
Meanwhile, in further good news, Bundaberg-born player Coen Hess has been selected for the Cowboys as well on the bench.
With two to drop out of the team ahead of the match, both players could be fighting it out with each other for a spot in the side.
Finally, Patrick's brother Felise Kaufusi has been selected on the bench for the Storm's match against Canberra.
Playing what will be his 20th match of the season, he will be aiming to help the Storm maintain their position at the top of the ladder.
They will take on the Raiders on Monday night in Canberra as they chase their seventh straight win in the competition.
