OUR SAY: Farmers are pretty worked up
FARMERS are not normally a group of people known for protesting but yesterday in Bundaberg they turned out in force to picket the office of Leanne Donaldson.
The Bundaberg MP is the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and her government is set to introduce a range of laws designed to protect the environment.
On the surface it's a worthy initiative, the only problem is farmers claim the new land-clearing laws impinge on their right to do with their land what they like.
They say in a tough global market it will stop them from being efficient and competitive. In short they won't make money.
It's a good argument and I know most farmers will do what they can to protect the environment.
Farmers need to be able to make money from their investment, otherwise governments need to fill the financial void.
