Otto sprints to new record: Meet Bundy's new track star

AS MATT Otto crossed the finish line on Saturday, he knew his time was quick.

Competing at the Little Athletics Queensland Spring Carnival in the 100m in Bundaberg Matt smashed the record for U16 boys to set a new mark of 11.17s.

But that's not even half the story.

Out with a hip flexor injury suffered in the state junior titles in February, Otto has been able to cut half a second from his best time with limited preparation and plenty of determination since resuming training in July.

Now one of the fastest juniors in the state he is closing in on records that have not been broken for almost 20 years.

Talking after the meet Otto said the time came as a shock to him.

"My coach (Robert Hopper) thought I would have got down to 11.1 around Queensland (school titles time)," he said.

"(We are) three weeks out and I am already at that stage."

Confident his ability was good enough Otto said he got perfect conditions to set the time.

"There was no headwind and there was no tailwind," he said.

"I could have got it and got it so it was good to smash it."

With the focus now on the school titles next month in Brisbane, the 15-year-old said the goal was to get to the top.

"I'm confident in myself, I should go well at the Queensland (school event)," he said.

"I just want to win nationals but first I need to qualify.."

Proud of his achievements Murray Otto said his son's fantastic work ethic complements his talent in the sport.

Matt will now compete at the school championships from October 20-23.
