Footy Final optimism

I'M A bit of a fairweather friend to rugby league. I barely watch it all year, but when the finals come around I can barely be dragged away from it.

And here we are this year, with two Queensland teams playing in the Grand Final.

I always think there's a sense of optimism that goes with big sporting events, especially when we know a Queensland team will emerge victorious this Sunday no matter what.

People talk to random strangers about the footy, they spend money on memorabilia, on food and drink if they watch the big game from a local venue - or much more if they decide to travel to the match.

So while I don't always think some league players are the greatest role models, I'm happy to be sucked into this footy finals fever just like everyone else. Me? I'll be cheering for the Cowboys, but I won't be disappointed if the Broncos win.

If you're a fan, I hope you collected our team posters in today's paper. Don't miss our eight pages of finals previews in tomorrow's paper, including that other small event happening on Saturday - the AFL Grand Final.
