Online campaign to win Virgin over
BUNDABERG man Brent Ephraims is desperate for cheaper airfares and he’s making sure his voice is heard.
Mr Ephraims started the Facebook group I want Virgin Blue flights to and from Bundaberg on Wednesday after a report in the NewsMail that Bundaberg may be considered for Virgin Blue flights once the airport upgrade had been completed.
“We often fly to Sydney and Melbourne and Qantas Link is too ridiculously expensive, so having Virgin Blue would be great,” he said.
The group was started about 6pm on Wednesday, and by last night it had more than 900 members.
“I knew there would be quite a few people out there who would want it, but this is amazing,” he said.
Mr Ephraims said he would welcome any low-cost airline because it would allow people to holiday further afield.
“Having cheap flights would be about the same price as a tank of petrol and people could travel to places like Sydney and Melbourne rather than Hervey Bay or Bargara,” he said.
Bundaberg locals who had joined the site agreed with Mr Ephraims.
Phillip Fresta wrote: “Yes, please! As long as I can remember it has been more expensive flying Bundaberg to Brisbane, than flying to some overseas destinations.”
The current cost of Qantas Link flights from Bundaberg to Brisbane — up to $393 one way — also had many in the group hoping for Virgin Blue to set up in Bundaberg.
“It’s really sad when you can fly out of Australia for the same price to fly from Bundy to Brisbane,” Stephanie Murdoch wrote.
Virgin Blue spokesperson Amanda Bolger said the Facebook group may not have an impact on the airline’s decision.
“It won’t come into consideration. What will come into consideration is available aircraft, infrastructure and demand,” she said.
