‘One of the most ludicrous films ever made’

THE latest Transformers movie had the worst opening weekend in the franchise's history.

Transformers: The Last Knight topped the US box office on the weekend but has made just $US69 million in the states during its first five days (it has made $US265 million worldwide).

The previous four films in the franchise all made at least $US100 million domestically during the same time period.

Perhaps cinema-goers have been put off by the shocking reviews. None of the Transformers movies have been received well by critics but Michael Bay's latest effort has been especially panned.

Dark Horizons for example described it as "one of the most ludicrous films ever made" and The Last Knight currently has just a 15 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here's what some other critics had to say:

• "Everything goes boom, crash, oomph, peow, wallop, zing, zat and zoom for 150 minutes. It's terrifying. It physically hurts. It is so darn-near incomprehensible, I almost asked for my money back. And I didn't even pay to see it." - The Herald (Ireland)

• "A movie that's cut like the world's longest and most tedious trailer, pinballing from scene to scene and rarely spending more than a few seconds on any single shot." - Washington Post

• "Anyone capable of explaining the near-incomprehensible storyline deserves a prize of some sort." - Hollywood Reporter

• "The rock 'em sock 'em finale of Last Knight finally comes after over two hours ... and it features, once again, the threat of Earth's complete destruction. If it means they'll stop making Transformer movies, I'm starting to think that's not such a bad deal." - Boston Globe

• "At one point Sir Anthony Hopkins says: 'What a bitchin' ride'. That's all you need know." - Concrete Playground

• "I can't remember the last time I felt so little while watching a movie. I wasn't even bored, so much as just dazed, like I'd woken up in someone else's dream." - Mashable

• "Transformers: The Last Knight is like staring at a projected kaleidoscope for two and a half hours and then trying to tell someone about the plot." - Uproxx
