Olympic gold medallist returns home to Mackay

MACKAY will feature on national television Wednesday night, when a well-known sportswoman shows off the region.

Cathy Freeman was born in Mackay in 1973 and returned to Slade Point and surrounds last year to film an episode of Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery.

The ABC show features a different personality each week as they tour their hometown.

In Wednesday's episode Freeman checks out her first home, although she wasn't too sure it was the right house, as it looked different.

She describes a happy, laid-back household where, as the big sister to two little brothers, she took on some of the mothering duties.

She also talks about her love of running and the exhilarating sense of freedom that she's always derived from it.

At St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Freeman steps host Julia Zemrio through her very first race - a race she almost didn't win because, as a shy five-year-old, she tried to hide in the toilets rather than compete.

At Cathy Freeman Oval, Slade Point, they meet Freeman's friend Cindy Willett, who trained with her at Little Athletics and shared an obsession with Whitney Houston.

Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery airs on ABC Wednesday at 8pm.
