Officials pull pin on trots

BOB McCrae does not mind the occasional punt, but this was one gamble he was not about to take.

The Wide Bay Harness Racing Club president knew he and his committee had no other choice yesterday but to call off tomorrow’s scheduled seven-race trotting meeting at the Maryborough Showgrounds.

This week’s rain had left the track in no fit state to hold the first trotting meeting at the venue since 1995.

“We have had so much rain over the past couple days that it’s been impossible for any machinery to get out on the track and do the work needed. The track was so wet it was like liquid cement,” McCrae, from Childers, said.

It left the president with little choice other than to call it off and do it sooner rather than later to alert all those involved with the meet.

“Calling the meeting off is a crying shame, I know, but we did the right thing,” he said.

McCrae said plans were already in the pipeline to organise another suitable date for a meet.
