No luck for campdrafters, but experience invaluable

CAMPDRAFTING: THERE wasn't much luck for Big River Campdraft Club at the ABCRA National Campdraft finals in Tamworth over the weekend.

Gareth McLennan was the highest placed competitor, coming equal third in the Open Rider category.

Club president Ric Ensby, who competed in the finals along with son Cody and John Elder, said they were unlucky to end up without any placings.

"It's a funny old sport, and you don't have good weekends all the time," he said. "The places only went down to fifth, and we were unlucky to miss out.

"Sometimes you go well, and sometimes you don't."

Ensby said competing at the national competition was a good experience, especially for Cody.

"That experience at a younger age is a huge thing, it's a building thing and to have that behind him, you draw on it hugely," he said.

"It will definitely help I'd say."

Cody was also involved in the grand opening of the event, which is the pinnacle of campdrafting in Australia.

"Cody was one of the people who represented the campdrafting side of the event, and coming into the stadium in front of a few thousand people, it was very exciting," Ensby said.

With a new point scoring year already under way, Ensby said the members are keen to start again.

"They're definitely striving to get back to that level again, it's very hotly contested."
