Nine fires in seven hours - police hunting for arsonists

POLICE are searching for two men, believed to be aged in their 20s, after firefighters spent a day battling nine fires all deliberately lit over the course of seven hours between Wooyung and Kingscliff.

In a statement, police said the first of a series of small scrub fires was called in just after 1pm on Saturday.

Rural Fire Service brigades from Tweed Coast, Cudgen, and Chinderah, along with residents in some of the areas, spent the afternoon dealing with the blazes, managing to extinguish them all before any serious damage could be done.

1pm: Wooyung Road, Pottsville

2.15pm: Round Mountain Road, Bogangar

2.17pm: Tweed Coast Road, Cabarita Beach

3.08pm: Tweed Coast Road, Wooyung

3.13pm: Tweed Coast Road, Wooyung (near Wooyung Caravan Park)

3.39pm: Celerywood Drive, Casuarina

4.24pm: Cylinders Drive, Kingscliff

8.10pm: Collins Lane, Casuarina (two fires)

Residents at Casuarina managed to extinguish the last two fires before firefighters reached the scene and told police they saw two men with a torch hiding in scrub nearby.

One of the residents approached the men and they ran off towards the beach.

The men were estimated to be in their 20s.
